 The Hello Song is a great way to start any session; the children really enjoy it and it lets them know that now it is time for music. It is very simple to learn so it can be used from the very first class. Many different actions can be used to accompany this song - why not make up your own? Normally we start with the children holding hands in a circle. Still holding hands we walk round in one direction for 8 beats, back again for 8, into the centre for 4, out again for 4, and then finishing with a slow spin while waving (see picture, right). For the second verse we like to ask the children for suggestions of different languages to sing hello in. This is also a nice way of integrating children from non-English speaking countries. After this to get the children energised and ready for the music session you can also exchange 'hello' for action words like jump, clap, sit down/stand up, etc. | Hello Song Anon.  The Hello Song can also be used at the end of the music session as the Goodbye Song. In a circle, without holding hands this time, you wave goodbye to each other; first line - left hand, second line right hand, third line - left, then right, and then both hands on the last 'goodbye everybody' with a slow spin. With this activity you can also experiment with dynamics and distances. I like to start this song in a small circle in the middle and then between each line everyone takes a step backwards starting singing loudly and getting quieter as the distance increases. |
